WHY HELP OFFENDERS? ARGUMENTS FOR REHABILITATION AS A PENAL STRATEGY.
- Abstract
The article discusses several theories which had supported the use of rehabilitation of offenders as a penal strategy. It is reported that, according to the theory concerned with utility, the state and social reconstruction, the need for the rehabilitation is not for the sake of saving a soul for God, instead it is to make sure that the offender attain competence, character and usefulness in the service of the proper collective goals of a secular state thereby becoming a good citizen rather than merely a good person. However, as reported, the utilitarian theory can be criticized on several fronts including, the fact that if we apply a greatest happiness principle then executing some offenders might make more people happy than rehabilitating them.
