- Abstract
This work evidences the existence of poster making in Bogota during the nineteenth century which was unknown until now. During the research the material culture was explored using the historiographical method from observation, search, registry, categorization, systematization and contextualization of various samples. The field work was carried out in some historical archives and museums, for example, the historical archive of Sevilla, "Archivo de Indias", the "Guillermo Hernández de Alba" Archive, the room of rare books and manuscripts from the "Luis Ángel Arango Library" and the National Library of Colombia. In general terms when depicting the material found, it was possible to verify that there existed poster making in Bogotá although initially everything seemed to be nationalist propaganda. Typographic elements as part of the visual composition were included, to which is added freedom of press since 1849 that allowed messages different to the political subject. This allowed discovering that big format posters were printed in Bogotá between 1855 and 1878. These posters became evident again from 1902 and, despite the advances in graphic arts in the late nineteenth century, during the 80s and the 90s, with engraving of photography and typography, such novelty was only used in editorial projects, almanacs and some labels.
