- Abstract
Learning in organizations is a theme that has aroused much interest from the academic community, managers and entrepreneurs. In parallel, what is observed is a multiplicity of approaches and focuses on the subject, sometimes confusing and contradictory. Part of this confusion is due to the complexity of the learning concept applied to the organizational context, even when considering the most basic level of analysis - the individual. This study aimed to map the Brazilian academic research on learning in organizations in order to identify the different approaches and concepts in the literature as well the stage of the theme development in Brazil. The work is important for providing a framework for future studies on the subject. The analytical basis of the work is a dichotomy presented in the literature between two main approaches, Organizational Learning (OL) and Learning Organizations (LO), the first approach with descriptive focus and the second with prescriptive focus. To achieve the proposed objective were analyzed 56 articles published in twelve Brazilian journals of Administration, from January 2000 to July 2011. The following analysis criteria were used: (a) approach, (b) focus, (c) research type, (d) analysis level, (e) time frame, (f) method, (g) theoretical basis and (h) references. Three other specific analysis criteria were also used: (i) dichotomy between OL and LO approaches, (j) complementarity between the descriptive and prescriptive focus, and (k) theoretical evolution of the subject. The dichotomy would be a sign that the theme has been developed, since the realization of sequential studies using different approaches enable progress in theoretical and/or practical utility. However, the results indicate that studies of learning in organizations in Brazil are still very incipient in terms of theory and construction of knowledge. It was also observed that most of these studies is associated with the OL approach and the descriptive focus, a result that can be explained in part by the academic nature of the journals in which they were published. Overall, the results indicate that the association between OL-description and LO- prescription does not seem to be as clear as much of the literature points; there are differences between the informed approach and the one actually used in the study; and the nonexistent of accumulation of theoretical references, with few works by the same author that have continuity and/or theoretical evolution. Discussions of the findings and a research agenda for future studies are presented at the end of the article.
