- Abstract
The orofacial clefts are congenital malformations of high incidence, considered the second most common in the population. They are often associated with genetic and environmental factors, which may act alone or in combination. There is evidence that multivitamin use linked to folic acid can exert a protective factor. The first difficulty of a baby with clefts is breastfeeding. This is a descriptive literature review, which was carried out through books and scientific papers indexed in Lilacs and Scielo databases published between 1994 and 2007. This study aims at identifying the prevalence of orofacial clefts and analyzing the factors that interfere with breastfeeding, as well as highlighting the importance of the role of nurses in the guidance to nursing mothers. It was observed that among the types of orofacial clefts, cleft lip and palate was the most prevalent, affecting predominantly males. Regarding risk factors, studies indicate a variety of possible causes that may be genetic or environmental. The prognosis is good when not associated with other malformations. Infants with clefts tend to be breastfed for less time by natural processes, especially those with cleft palate and lip and palate and that the guidelines for health professionals can significantly improve the quality of nursing and mother-child bond.
