- Abstract
The article examines Edith Wharton's use of the Persephone Myth in her short stories. An overview of the inclusion of Demeter, Persephone's mother in one of her stories such as "Pomegranate Seed," wherein one of the characters, Mrs. Ashby, ponders female solidarity. It mentions that various critics observed a pattern of her use of such mythological figures which manifests Wharton's vision of female caretaking and self sacrificing. It also notes that she attempted to incorporate the underworld or the realm of Hades in her short fiction for over 30 years.
