- Abstract
This article discusses the emergency surgical management of sigmoid volvulus (SV), a condition characterized by the twisting of the sigmoid colon. The authors compare the outcomes of patients treated with primary anastomosis (reconnecting the intestines) or colostomy (creating an opening in the abdomen for waste elimination) following emergency sigmoid colectomy for SV. They analyze data from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database and present their findings on mortality rates, morbidity rates, and complications. The authors also raise questions about decision-making, risk factors, and the economic burden associated with different treatment approaches.
