- Abstract
The Imperial Alexander Lyceum was the central and most celebrated educational institution in the Russian Empire in the first half of the 19th century. It was founded in 1811 by Tsar Alexander I. in order to offer future top officials and advisors from families close to the Emperor the best and most reliable possible education. Thus the main task of the lyceum was to provide sound knowledge; there was also a patriotic dimension, with the goal of encouraging faithful service of the state. The institution was in existence for thirty-two years, until 1843, when it was closed down by Tsar Nicholas I.
