- Abstract
The article relates the circumstances under which painter James McNeill Whistler's drypoint, etching portrait of Anglo-Irish soldier, Major General Garnet Wolseley, was executed. Topics discussed are Wolseley's literary and artistic interests and association with aesthetic circles, representation of Wolseley during battles in paintings including "After the Battle" and Fighting in the Ashantee Forest," and the shared admiration of Whistler and Wolseley for General Robert E. Lee's doctor brother.
