- Abstract
An essay is presented which discusses the significance of the slogan "Free Trade and Sailors' Rights" during the War of 1812. The author discusses the success of David Porter, captain of the U.S. naval ship "Essex," who captured British ships during the war while displaying a flag featuring the slogan. He comments on European and U.S. views of free trade as a way of maintaining the balance of power between nations. The impressment of sailors by the British navy is also discussed.
