- Abstract
This article focuses on geopolitics. Guantánamo, Cuba is the archetype of the spaces of exception produced by contemporary geopolitics. It is the space of the suspension of the norm; it is that space of indistinction between order and disorder within which sovereign power decides the confine between life and death and where, precisely from that confine, it attempts to order the world, to put in order that which lies outside camp, that which is not Guantánamo. The detainees of Guantánamo become, accordingly, the archetype of the monster produced by the geographies of exception that guide the rhetoric of the war on terror. The space of exception is, then, an unsettling point of contact between the broader structure of the norm and the individual, between geography and biography. It is here that the biopolitics of exception takes shape, and it is from here that it insinuates itself insidiously into everyday lives; invisible, the product of a space of indistinction, a space that is neither inside nor outside, a space of exception.
