- Title
But is it Good For Democracy ?
- Authors
Oz-Salzberger, Fania
- Abstract
The article discusses the nation of Israel, focusing on its dual character as a democracy and as a Jewish state. The official proclamation of the founding of the modern state of Israel is analyzed, and its assertion that the country must guarantee freedom of religion and equal rights for all its inhabitants is emphasized. Given that a large minority of Israelis are Palestinian Arab Muslims, Israel's identity as a Jewish state has caused no little philosophical perplexity and political debate. The many and varied definitions of what it means to be a Jew are discussed in this context.
