- Abstract
Objective: To determine the relationship between numbers of remaining teeth with oral health related quality of life among elderly aged 60 years and older in Kota Bharu. Subjects & Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Badang district Kota Bharu, Kelantan. A total of 223 randomly selected dentate elderly community-dwelling were included. Consented participants were interviewed at their homes using the Malay translated version of the Short Oral Health Impact Profile [S-OHIP (M)] which is a 14-item scaled index of social impacts. Oral examination was carried out to record dentate status. Results: Mean age of elderly was 68.8 (SD7.38) years. Mean number of remaining teeth was 12.0 (SD=8.37) with 76.3% having less than 20 remaining teeth. Overall there was a significant (p=0.010) negative association (b=-0.173) between number of remaining teeth and total S-OHIP (M) score. Linear regression analysis identified four main factors that were difficulty in chewing (p<0.001), uncomfortable to eat (p<0.001), food stuck in mouth (p<0.001) and avoidance of food (p<0.001) Discussion & Conclusion: Our findings suggested that the number of remaining teeth influenced oral health related quality of life (OHRQoL) of elderly people. For every one tooth present, the OHRQoL was improved by 0.17 units. Efforts are therefore needed to improve the OHRQoL of our future elderly people by educating and promoting oral health among the current cohort of adults so that they retain as many natural teeth into old age. Further research is required to probe into factors influencing OHRQoL among adults.
