- Title
'MAKING A SONG AND DANCE ABOUT IT': (Self) Presentation in 'The Ballad of John Spenser, A Cheshire Gallant'.
- Authors
Baldwin, Elizabeth
- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the ballad "John Spenser a Chesshire Gallant, his life and repentance, who for killing of one Randall Gam was lately executed at Burford a mile from Nantwich," which dates from 1617. The author argues that the person mentioned in the ballad is the same John Spencer who was cited in the Visitation Proceedings of 1611 for drumming on the Sabbath. The author tries to figure out Spencer's background story and piece together information about him.
