- Title
Microbial genetics: Predicting the future.
- Authors
Jermy, Andrew
- Abstract
The article highlights a microbial genetics study which indicated that the anticipation of environmental stimuli is an adaptive trait that has evolve at the cellular level in microorganisms. The authors of the study tested in vivo, the response of Escherichia coli to the metabolic environment encountered in the intestine, in which the bacteria were exposed to lactose and maltose. The authors observed a fitness advantage when bacterial cells growing on maltose were pre-exposed to lactose.
