- Title
The Politics of Patronage: Lawyers, Philanthropy, and the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund by Benjamin Márquez (review).
- Authors
Orozco, Cynthia
- Abstract
While Márquez does not provide a blueprint for MALDEF's future financial independence, he has successfully argued that Ford Foundation funding translated into less power for MALDEF lawyers. Chapter 1's interpretive framework theorizes the relationship between cause lawyers, philanthropy attorneys like those from the Ford Foundation, and social movement lawyers. Márquez also shows that LULAC leader Tijerina's connection to Jack Greenberg of Ford gave birth to MALDEF.
