- Abstract
The article discusses the school buildings which help teachers as well as students to give their best performance. It is a common belief that a high performance school is must to have a wonderful school building. The Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) has given some characteristics of high performance school buildings. For the school board members and school facility management personnel the cost involved in a high performance school building is most important issue. The lowest cost for a high performance school could be $1.50/ft2 which includes soft costs. The design of a high performance school is initiated with building the building envelope and specifically windows. High quality low-e windows would serve the purpose but their positioning should be done in a very careful manner. To avoid penetrating and bright heat they should be on the north or south of each classroom. Then classroom should be equipped with electric classroom lighting to supplement daylight on winter mornings. There should be well defined positioning of heating, cooling, dehumidification and ventilation. INSET: Research Results.
