- Authors
Brenner, Menachem; Subrahmanyam, Marti G.
- Abstract
The article focuses on short-selling, the practice of marketing shares that one did not possess. Short-selling was generally allowed in most countries until the present financial crisis. It mentions that Great Britain and Japan have indefinitely banned short-selling to stabilize their markets. Regulators in the U.S. are placed under pressure to reinstate the ban on short selling in selected securities or to bring back the up-tick rule. Additionally, it provides several policy recommendations.
