- Abstract
The article describes the methodology of using a new dataset to estimate union/non-union wage differentials for Great Britain. It uses the Great Britain Department for Education and Employment's New Earnings Survey Panel Dataset (NESPD). Relative to existing studies, the NESPD represents value-added for a variety of reasons. The article describes the NESPD and the coverage information it provides; deals with some methodological issues related to the estimation of union/non-union wage differentials; discusses precisely how to construct estimates using these panel data; discusses the results for 1978 and 1985, the years for which there is information on the type of agreement; examines the movement in the union wage differential between 1975 and 1995; and finally concludes. The New Earnings Survey is an annual employer-based survey which aims to cover one percent of all employees whose earnings are above the lower limit for National Insurance payments. The sampling frame is based on the last two digits of the employee's National Insurance number. In practice, for a variety of reasons, the number of usable responses falls well short of the one percent target.
