- Abstract
The article reflects on Narrative journal editor James Phelan's experiences with author-professor Wayne C. Booth, who passed away last October 2005. Phelan describes the many characters of Booth and likens it to a family with many members. He accounts on his being a student of Booth and how he was initially disappointed with the professor's disinterest in his study, as compared to the enthusiasm of his former professor Sheldon Sacks. He shares that after being taught by Booth and the latter's release of his book Critical Understanding, his way of evaluating literature became strongly influenced by the author-professor, for he used to view literature only according to the Neo-Aristotelian criteria. He credits Booth as one of the main reasons why he is continuously rewarded and challenged as an editor.
