- Abstract
INTEREST in Red Sea brines and metalliferous sediments commenced in 1948 with reports of anomalously high bottom water temperatures in the vicinity of Atlantis II Deep1. These reports were confirmed in the mid 1960s (refs 2-4) and subsequent investigations have revealed at least thirteen occurrences of brine pools and metalliferous sediment throughout the length of the Red Sea5-7. Detailed sampling of one deep, Nereus Deep (23° 10′N, 37° 15′E), has indicated the presence of brines and metalliferous sediments of distinctive composition.
