- Abstract
Overview I A History of Advertising: The First 300,000 Years i is a truly comprehensive account of advertising growth and development. List Mania In addition to the extensive timelines, great selection of illustrations, and snappy prose, Richards has compiled impressive lists of advertising institutions, trade characters, jingles, and slogans over time. From the outset, Richards defines advertising broadly: "An advertisement is any communication with the intent and/or effect of promoting a product, service, idea/concept, brand, or other entity (real or imagined)" (p. 10). The book is so exceptionally well-illustrated with photos of promotional artifacts, print ads, brand names, and advertising people that it lives up to its promise on the back cover of "an advertising museum in portable form.".
