The article presents a study which provides evidence regarding homeostatic mechanisms regulating neuronal firing in awake animals in vivo and suggests how synaptic scaling contributes to the process. The proposed homeostatic plasticity mechanisms to maintain neuronal firing rates within an optimum range is cited. It is inferred that disruptions in homeostatic plasticity may contribute to disease states characterized by the brain's activity imbalances.
