- Abstract
This article examines the professional lives of Muslim women in post-colonial Asia and the role of religion in their careers. It discusses how women in various fields use religious knowledge to shape their professional identities and explores the impact of neoliberalism on professionalism. The article emphasizes the need for a contextualized understanding of professionalism in Islam and discusses the use of the ijazah system in Quran recitation. It highlights the growing visibility of Muslim women as activists, businesswomen, and entrepreneurs, and explores the diverse interpretations and applications of Islamic teachings among Muslim women professionals. The article calls for a more context-sensitive approach to studying faith-based professional activity and the exploration of gendered perspectives in this context.
