- Title
NIGERIA: Union Leader Detained.
- Abstract
The Nigerian police have been accused of detaining the leader of the country's largest labor union, Joe Ajaero, during a protest. The police claim that they took Ajaero into "protective custody" to keep him safe from a mob attack. The incident occurred after a crackdown on a workers' rights protest in Imo state. The labor unions have been in talks with the government over recent reforms that have led to increased fuel and food prices. The unions have threatened to call a strike if their demands are not met, including the resignation of police officials. In other news, a boat carrying local traders sank in Taraba State, leaving 73 people missing and 17 bodies recovered so far. Boat accidents are common in Nigeria due to overcrowding and lack of regulation. President Bola Tinubu has appointed Ola Olukoyede as the new chairman of the anti-corruption Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), replacing Abdulrasheed Bawa.
