- Abstract
This paper presents the results of the study on phenotypic and genetic trends, population genetic parameters, heritability and breeding values of fattening and slaughter traits of 1358 Hungarian Simmental bulls evaluated on the progeny test database of Association of Hungarian Simmental Breeders. Trends were calculated by weighted linear regression analysis, while the population genetic parameters and breeding values used general linear model (GLM). According to the results, the lowest heritability value (h2 = 0.23) in SEUROP fatness score was found. In case of the muscularity score, the SEUROP conformation score and the meat percentage medium (h2 = 0.32, 0.26 and 0.32), in case of other traits high heritability (h2 = 0.42-0.52) values were estimated. The phenotypic trends of the fattening and slaughtering traits of bulls born between 2001 and 2019 showed a stagnant direction. Between the breeding values of sires for some traits (weight gain per day of life, carcass weight) larger, with other traits (dressing percentage, SEUROP conformation score) smaller differences were found. By the data of the genetic trend calculation, the steepness values of the evaluated traits were positive, the genetic trends showed a slightly improving direction in the estimated period. The results indicate that the beef production ability of dual purpose Hungarian Simmental breed has not reduced in the past years.
