The aim of this article is to show how the concept of support verb came about and how this most important linguistic entity has evolved. This idea, first expressed by Z. Harris, was systematically developed by various linguists working with Maurice Gross at the LADL. The article points out the limitations of the early analyses and proposes a systematic description of nominal predicates based on object classes. The resulting description can be regarded as a primer of nominal predicates.
