- Authors
Jones, Garth N.
- Abstract
An essay is presented on the history of U.S.-Pakistani relations, focusing on U.S. economic and agricultural assistance to Pakistan and on the attitudes of Pakistanis toward the U.S. The author outlines the efforts of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) in providing food aid and helping to initiate the Green Revolution in Pakistan in the 1960s and 1970s, saying the aid had a major impact in averting famine. He expresses dismay about the negative attitudes many Pakistanis have toward the U.S. in the aftermath of this aid. He assesses Pakistan's history and social and economic conditions, pointing to the 1947 India-Pakistan partition as a significant negative factor. Other topics include terrorism, inconsistencies in U.S. foreign policy, and the role of Islam.
