- Abstract
The article discusses the etymology of the Islamic legal term 'shāhadat al-istikshāf,' which relates to reports given to a judge in legal cases from informants. The article describes the history of the role of a judge in Islamic law, a report circulated in 1995 by Israeli lawmaker Qadi Ahmad Nāṭūr, and Ḥanafī jurisprudence. The author analyzes the term as it was used historically by the Ottoman empire and in cases from the 1990s.
