- Abstract
The article discusses effective strategies for reducing the risk of steroid-induced osteoporosis. It cites an evidence-based study which revealed that calcium, in combination with vitamin D, prevents bone loss and is recommended in all patients. A systematic review of randomized controlled trials also found that patients receiving glucocorticoids with calcium and vitamin D gained bone mass. Patients who also received alendronate or placebo demonstrated an incidence of vertebral fracture of 0.79 percent and 6.8 percent.
