- Abstract
In the travel writings written by Western travelers based on their trips to the East, Istanbul, the cradle of many civilizations, takes place, and the heritage remaining from these civilizations is revealed with its cultural texture. These works, which present the family life of the period along with the architecture of the city, give information about the Ottoman Turks from the eyes of the travelers. One of these works is the City of Empires Istanbul 1830, written by Joseph-François Michaud and Jean-Joseph-François Poujoulat, who were French travelers in the mid- 19th century and were both journalists, writers, and historians. The authors describe the Ottoman society and family structure in their travel books. In this work, written together by Michaud and Poujoulat, which represents the view of Istanbul from the outside, Ottoman house architecture is included under the title of "Turkish houses", and the importance of the house the fact in Turkish family culture is mentioned. The historical roots of Turkish culture are mentioned. Although it is emphasized that the houses built by the Turkish society, which used to live in the form of nomads, were created by the conditions of the time, it is stated that the cultural life practices in their houses reflect the past and the traces of nomadism are maintained in spatial areas. In this study, which will be handled with a descriptive and sociological method, the social structure of these two travelers, in which the Ottomans' view of life was in parallel with their lifestyle, they shaped their houses accordingly, and the emphasis on privacy was shaped by the understanding of Islam will be revealed.
