- Abstract
Nicholas Galanin's temporary installation, "In every language there is Land / En cada lengua hay una Tierra," is a steel sculpture located in Brooklyn Bridge Park. The sculpture, sponsored by the Public Art Fund, resembles the United States-Mexico border wall and evokes a sense of foreboding. Galanin's use of connected planes of steel tubing allows viewers to move through the structure and always see the surrounding landscape. The title of the installation references the erasure of Native American languages and the connection between language and land. Galanin's work is part of a conversation among contemporary Native American artists about the effects of colonialism on language and land. The artist's request for the removal of another artwork from the National Gallery of Art, in protest of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, raises questions about the effectiveness and artistic value of activism. The article suggests that artists should inspire and trust their audiences to exercise judgment, rather than instrumentalizing their work for causes beyond its scope.
