- Authors
Roberts, Kelly M.; Smith, Kendal N.
- Abstract
This article describes the findings from attorney interviews conducted as part of a qualitative study examining barriers to reconciliation among divorcing parents in a large Midwestern state. A systems theory approach provided the framework for investigating key components of the divorce process and incorporated statutory analysis and in-depth interviews with divorcing spouses, family law judges, and attorneys. Results indicated extensive variation in attorney perceptions of the lawyer's role in facilitating reconciliation. Major themes revealed reconciliation constraints related to statutory requirements, mistrust of opposing counsel, lack of experience, inadequate family law education, and attorney beliefs about clients.
