The article offers a business cycle analysis of debt and equity financing. It introduces a simple two-period model to analyze the optimal capital structures and the response of firm financing to exogenous shocks, such as a productivity shock. It also examines how well a fully dynamic, heterogeneous-firm model replicates the business cycle of debt and equity issuance.
