- Abstract
The drop in demand resulting from changes linked to the Covid-19 pandemic may reduce sales and profitability of small businesses, raising doubts about the feasibility of keeping the business running in these economic conditions. Therefore, this research aimed to analyze the applicability of the concept of closing point in the decision to keep a fruit and vegetable shop open during the Covid-19 pandemic. An interventionist research was carried out, with a qualitative approach, and after collecting the necessary data in the company's internal controls, the balance point and the closing point were calculated. The results from that show that, even operating below the break-even point, it would be interesting for the company to remain in operation if it managed to sell more than 8,580.61 units (equivalent to the monthly revenue of R $ 23,919.70), as long as the same proportion is maintained in quantities sold of the products of the reference month. In other words, if the billing does not fall by more than 46.94% in relation to the amount billed in the base month of the study, in periods of low demand there would be the generation of resources (contribution margin) to pay part of the costs / expenses as well. "noneliminable" fixed assets with temporary closure of operations. The study's contribution consisted in adapting the concept of the closing point to cover a real company that sells various products. This characteristic differs from the publications that mentioned the closing point, as they referred to numerical examples with a formula that allowed to involve only one product.
