- Abstract
Aim: Lung cancer consists a major health problem nowadays. The purpose of the current casecontrol study was to research the possible associations between periodontal disease parameters and lung cancer risk in a sample of Greek out-patients referred to a medical and a dental private practice. Material and methods: The study sample consisted of 190 individuals, 120 males and 70 females, aged 45 to75 years. Data were collected by means of an interviewer administered questionnaire and an oral clinical examination. Statistical analysis of the questionnaire items was performed by using a multiple regression analysis model in order to assess possible associations between lung cancer as a dependent variable and periodontal disease indices as independent variables. Results: Gingival inflammation [OR= 2.137, 95% CI= 0.960-4.757], advanced clinical attachment loss [OR=1.847, 95%CI=0.910-3.752], lower socio-economic [OR= 2.408, 95% CI= 1.199-4.834], lower educational level [OR= 2.146, 95% CI= 1.075-4.284] and smoking [OR=3.283, 95% CI= 1.436-7.508] were associated with anincreased lung cancer risk. Conclusion: Periodontal disease parameters such as gingival index and clinical attachment loss were associated with an increased lung cancer risk.
