Small airway disease in asthma: a new target for better asthma control?
- Authors

- Abstract
Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease lying along the entire respiratory tract. The variable, reversible and reproducible airflow obstruction affects the central and peripheral airways, the socalled small airways, provoking typical symptoms. There is much evidence that small airways are not a "silent zone". The pseudo-silent zone is part of the pathogenesis and natural history of asthma. This review is a summary of small airways' pathogenesis in different asthma phenotypes, new potential diagnostic tests for early detection of the inflammation process and better therapeutic interventions aiming better asthma control.
