- Abstract
In emergency and disaster situation including battlefi eld, rapid vascular access can make the difference between life and death in critically wounded patients whatever reason of the wound. In multiple trauma critical patients with gunshot wounds and/or blast injuries the peripheral venous access may be diffi cult or even impossible. Therefore, intraosseous vascular access (IOVA) is a quick maneuver that may allow fl uids and medication administration to the advanced medical facilities. On the battlefi eld, when using chemical warfare those who provide fi rst aid has full protective gear that doesn't allow maneuvers such as peripheral venous access, for which the use of IOVA may be the only option. The purpose of this paper is to provide information about the importance of intraosseous vascular access in emergency and battlefi eld situation.
