- Title
SO CLOSE A CONNECTION: PAINFUL ASSOCIATIONS IN SAMUEL RICHARDSON’S CLARISSA.
- Authors
TAYLOR, SUZANNE
- Abstract
An essay is presented on painful associations in the novel "Clarissa" by Samuel Richardson. It examines the way guilt appears to infect some persons and the mystery surrounding Clarissa's slow demise. It looks at the intelligibility of the novel's account of moral responsibility and justice. It also explores the novel's account of suffering, which suggests that the retribution associated with justice is neither individual nor universal.
