- Abstract
The present study was conducted to assess the prevalence of dental caries among school going children of Amritsar city. 1013 children between age group of 3-13 years were examined. The relationship of dental caries with various risk factors were investigated and was compared with a study conducted 10 years ago. It was found that overall caries prevalence has increased from 47.8% to 58.24%. Considering the various factors, higher caries prevalence was found in females, patients on vegetarian diet, those consuming no fruits or sticky foods. Also, high caries rate was found amongst the children who belonged to poor and middle socioeconomic strata, visited dental surgeons less often, and with poor oral hygiene. It indicated high treatment need among the child population and pointing towards a requirement to plan and implement organized oral health programs in the city.
