- Abstract
In the past, the most important health problem of societies was diseases caused by infections. However, since the beginning of the 20th century, these diseases have started to be replaced by preventable lifestyle-related diseases. Cardiovascular diseases in particular are at the forefront of these. The importance of lifestyle behaviors has begun to increase in order to combat these diseases. In this study, it was aimed to compare OECD countries in terms of lifestyle determinants of health. Smoking, alcohol use, physical activity and nutrition criteria were chosen as the lifestyle determinants of health. Data on the criteria were obtained from OECD, WHO, and OWID databases. The data covers the years 2013-2022. In this direction, TOPSIS method, one of the multi-criteria decision making methods, was used. Thus, the relative ranking of the countries according to the determined criteria was obtained. As a result of the analysis, it was found that the closest alternative to the positive ideal solution was Austria, the farthest alternative was Costa Rica, and Turkey was in the 30th place among 38 alternatives. Austria appears to be in a better position in terms of criteria. Thanks to this study, an objective ranking of OECD countries has been made. In addition, it is thought that this study will be a useful reference for future studies that will comparatively evaluate lifestyle determinants of health on both a country basis and an individual basis.
