- Abstract
A literary criticism is presented of the 1798 American novel "Reuben and Rachel" by Susanna Rowson. Some of the themes considered include the moral character and strength of its female characters, bildungsroman, historical fiction, and sentimentalism in literature. It is compared to other writings by Rowson including the play "Slaves in Algiers," as well as the novels "Sarah, or the Exemplary Wife" and "Charlotte Temple." Biographical details of Rowson's life are considered in relation to her writings.
