- Abstract
Jackfruit is a multi-purpose tree and it is known as second kalpavriksha. It yields large edible summer fruits and is a good source of nutritional and antioxidant components. Two main varieties of jackfruit are: varikka and koozha, with lots of variations exist in each of these varieties. This study mainly focuses on to identify the total phenolic content, total flavonoid content and antioxidant potential of different parts of the fruits through Folin-Ciocalteu reagent assay, Aluminium chloride colorimetric assay and DPPH scavenging assay, respectively. Jackfruit contain large amount of phytochemicals which provide immense health benefits. The study has proven that seeds of the koozha varieties of Artocarpus heterophyllus are better source of anti-oxidants and it can be used as both health supplement and food when compared to flakes (pericarp). Results indicated jackfruit to be a good source of antioxidant components and hold their potential for value addition and nutraceutical development. The study proved that antioxidant property of jackfruit is due to the presence of active bioflavonoids present in the extract. This is a pilot study on different varieties of jackfruit cultivar collected from different home yards of Kerala state.
