- Abstract
Experimental determination of the longitudinal stiffness of the piers of a long railway viaduct Regarding the design of longer railway bridges, track‐bridge‐interaction plays a decisive role because of the high brake and acceleration forces as well as the connection of the continuous rail with the superstructure. When calculating the effects of track‐bridge‐interaction a fundamental parameter is the longitudinal equivalent stiffness of piers and abutments with horizontally fixed bearings. The horizontal equivalent stiffness is commonly calculated by a pile grillage model. In the case of the Itz valley railway viaduct the longitudinal equivalent static stiffness respectively the "dynamic" stiffness has been determined experimentally by a static diagnostic load testing and by a braking test to determine the input parameters for the calculation of the additional rail stresses and the bearing forces. Associated to the experiments, numerical 3‐D FE analysis of the deep foundation system have been carried out in terms of class A predictions. In this article the experimental setup, execution and evaluation of both tests will be presented. Subsequently, the results of the tests will be compared with the numerical predictions.
