- Abstract
The study "Saxony 1923. The Left-Republican Project - a Missed Opportunity for the Weimar Democracy?" by Karl Heinrich Pohl examines the political developments in Saxony in the year 1923. The author argues that the conditions for a successful democratization in Saxony were more favorable than in other parts of the Reich. A strong working class, a socialist government, and the inclusion of the Communist Party in the formation of the government were the foundations for the "left-republican project". Despite some shortcomings, this project could have stabilized the republic and advanced democratization, but it was thwarted by the removal of the Saxon state government by the Reich executive. The study also sheds light on the achievements of Saxon reform politics and the political rhetoric of the Communists.
