- Abstract
At the beginning of 20th century, Italy was still engaged in a marked effort against illiteracy, trying to improve the cultural, social and economical conditions of the people. The problem was concerned not only with school and children but also with young men: in particular for the specific target of young soldier private and public initiatives were taken in order to urge them into reading, by promoting education through bibliographies, small libraries, and various series of publications. The outbreak of the First World War One did not interrupt this trend, but focused it on various specific aspects, such as the nationalistic propaganda. From this view, books catalogues for soldiers are very eloquent sources that reveal the aims, tendencies and priorities of the reading programmes which were created at the time, offering a large panorama of authors, works and series promoted in wartime.
