- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to present, define and describe the microstructure of print, electronic and online dictionaries, with practical emphasis on the left-core (formal) comment. While the first part of the analysis is an account of how dictionaries and microstructure have been defined and classified by various authors in the literature, in the second part, the elements which make up the left-core (formal) comment, i.e. the headword, spelling and pronunciation and the grammatical information, of a dictionary's microstructure are expanded on and illustrated with examples from the three dictionary types chosen for analysis. The conclusions show that the medium of a dictionary clearly influences its microstructure: it has both advantages (unlimited space, audio facilities with electronic and online dictionaries) and disadvantages (limited space, the absence of audio facilities with print dictionaries).
