- Title
Cotton Spokesmen Urge Testing Of Fabric Not Just The Finish.
- Abstract
The article reports on the move of the representatives of the National Cotton Council, Cotton Inc., and the U.S. Department of Agriculture's (USDA) Southern Regional Research Center to urge the National Cancer Institute to evaluate the carcinogenicity of flame retardant finishes by testing the treated fabrics rather than the chemicals alone. Phillip Wakelyn of the Cotton Council pointed out that the THPC and THPS finishes after polymerization are similar to the so called inherent fire retardant fibers such as modacrylics. As monomers used in the production of modacrylics are known carcinogens, the fibers would be disqualified for use in apparel if testing is done on the basis of the monomers used in their production.
