- Title
The sixteenth-century French emblem: decoration, diversion, or didacticism.
- Authors
Saunders, Alison
- Abstract
This article focuses on sixteenth century French emblem books with reference to renaissance literature. The author tries to gratify his query about the extent to which French emblem books fit into the three headings decoration, diversion, and didacticism. All French emblem books are decorative, being very much of the period from 1530s to 1550s, when French publishing houses revelled in ornate illustrated printing. However, the degree of decoration varies considerably from book to book. The decorative appearance is intended to make the books more pleasing to the eye, breaking up the text and thus making it easy for the readers.
