- Abstract
The soft -tissue drape of the face plays an important role in the facial esthetics, speech and other physiologic functions. The orthodontist is often confronted with the need to predict soft-tissue profile changes that may result from orthodontic treatment. The objectives of this study were to quantify the profile changes occurring in a diverse sample of orthodontic patients treated with extraction of the four first premolars and to evaluate the aesthetic consequences of these changes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Standardized pre-treatment and post-treatment lateral cephalograms of each individual subject were obtained. 11 soft tissue, dental & skeletal measurements were traced using cephalomentric landmarks and analysed. RESULTS: Significant change was found in the pre-treatment and post-treament nasolabial angle, mentolabial angle, upper lip thickness and interlabial gap following maxillary incisor retraction. A definite positive correlation exist between maxillary anterior teeth retraction with upper lip change.
