- Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to research retrospectively whether asthma and allergic rhinitis are related to total IgE, C-reactive protein (CRP) and complete blood count parameters. Materials and methods: Files of 443 children who applied to pediatric outpatient clinics of our hospital, aged 2-18 were retrospectively investigated. Patients were grouped into three as asthma (n=179), allergic rhinitis (n= 171) and control group (n= 93). Patients' ages, genders, total IgE, CRP and hemogram values were recorded. Results: While eosinophil count, MCHC and total IgE levels were significantly higher in asthma group, MCV levels were significantly lower. Lymphocyte count, CRP and total IgE levels were significantly higher in allergic rhinitis group compared with control group whereas neutrophil count were significantly lower and eosinophil count did not change significantly. Total IgE levels were higher in asthma and allergic rhinitis compared with controls. However, CRP levels were higher only in allergic rhinitis group. MCV levels were significantly lower in asthma group compared with controls. MCHC levels were significantly higher in asthma group compared with allergic rhinitis and control groups. Neutrophil count decreased while lymphocyte count increased significantly. Eosinophil count significantly increased compared with control group whereas a significant difference was not observed between allergic rhinitis and controls. Conclusions: Our findings suggest factors effective in asthma pathogenesis might be effective also in erythrocyte morphology. There are remarkable changes in blood eosinophil levels in asthma and in neuthrophil and lymphocyte levels in allergic rhinitis. Serum total IgE level increases in asthma group whereas it decreases in allergic rhinitis group.
